Through the decades of cinema their have been couples that ooze chemistry. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are the “IT” couple of the past few years, with Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and now Serena. Third time the charm?
Yes and No. Yes, the couple in this period drama are compelling to watch. Their costumes are just so “on point” for the late 1920’s in the most flattering way. Cooper is a wealthy timber baron dressed in refined yet rugged suits with the perfect dash of cowboy attire. Lawerence has never looked more beautiful in the fine clothes of the 1920’s. A romantic era of dressing. Beauty coupled with the knowledge and acumen of any logger man showcases Lawerence as a perfect role for her . Yes, the newly married lovebirds are just the romantic ticket we adore about the on screen chemistry of Cooper and Lawerence. You just can’t keep your eyes off of them. Just like you couldn’t keep your eyes off of Brad Pitt and Angelina Joile in “Mr.& Mrs. Smith” or Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers. The backdrop is a stunningly lush forest in North Carolina.
So let’s see, we have romance , costumes, & beautiful chemistry from the lead actors and really good performances as well from the supporting cast of Rhys Ifans and Toby Jones. All a positive,Yes. So why doesn’t this film work?
For one it is very predicable from start to finish. The pacing is so slow if it wasn’t for the great acting and all the positive’s in the afore mentioned you could fall asleep or walk out. Before you buy a ticket think of what it is you would want to get out of this film for your money. So, three times a charm? Bradley and Jennifer work but the film doesn’t.
